100 years ago, the 19th Amendment was ratified. By March 1920, a total of 35 states had approved the amendment, just shy of the three-fourths required. Tennessee became the state to tip the scale for women's suffrage on August 18th, 1920, coming down to the vote of the one 23-year-old Representative to break the tie in the Tennessee legislature. According to the History Channel:

"Although Burn opposed the amendment, his mother convinced him to approve it. Mrs. Burn reportedly wrote to her son: "Don't forget to be a good boy and help Mrs. Catt put the 'rat' in ratification."

With Burn's vote, the 19th Amendment was fully ratified."
